Delegates of Agudas Yisroel Visit Mexico City

Leaders of Agudas Yisroel recently visited Mexico City to reaffirm and strengthen the ties the Mexican Jewish community has with Agudas Yisroel, and to launch various programs there ahead of the Siyum HaShas.

“This trip recognizes the close connection that Agudah has with the Mexican community,” said Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel, Executive Vice President of Agudas Yisroel. “We still remember with appreciation the hundreds of people from Mexico who joined us at the last Siyum HaShas.”

Celebrating the Anniversary of the 11th Siyum HaShas and Getting Ready for the Upcoming 13th Siyum HaShas (New Video)

Today, Monday, 20 Adar I, February 25, marks the anniversary of Agudath Israel’s 11th Siyum Hashas of the Daf Yomi which took place in 2005. Because of the then unprecedented sold-out attendance, Klal Yisroel celebrated the 11th Siyum in two locations: Madison Square Garden in Manhattan and the Continental Airlines Arena in New Jersey. The overwhelming surge of new attendees demanded that a third location to be added, the Jacob K. Javits Center in Manhattan. The addition of a third location indicated that we were reaching an exciting turning point for the Daf Yomi.

WATCH: Looking Back to Look Forward: The 88th Anniversary of the First Siyum Hashas of Daf Yomi

This Tu B’Shevat marks the 88th anniversary of the very first, Global Siyum HaShas of Daf Yomi, which took place in Lublin, Poland, on Tu B’Shevat 5691- February 2, 1931.

Torah learning thrived in pre-war Europe. However, the early 1930s were also a difficult time for many Jews. Jewish communities struggled with financial burdens, and the challenges of living far from each other. The announcement of the siyum by Rav Meir Shapiro was therefore met with tremendous enthusiasm. The idea of achdus – the bringing together of many mekomos haTorah as they all celebrate learning the same Daf – day in and day out – for the previous 7 and a half years, was a thrilling, and history-altering event.

The Siyum is just a little more than a year away and The Agudah is gearing up for the greatest Torah celebration in recent Jewsih history. Since Rav Meir Shapiro initiated the learning of Daf Yomi at the Agudah Knessiah Gedolah in Vienna in 1923, The Agudah has been at the forefront of expanding Torah learning through the Daf. Since the churban in Europe, there has been an exponential increase in Daf Yomi learners form Siyum to Siyum. It may be hard to imagine anything greater than the last ma’amd at MetLife Stadium in August of 2012, but, get ready, for The Siyum, the 13th Global Siyum Hashas of the Daf Yomi.

Nothing brings back more potent memories for Torah Jews than flashing back to August 2012 as they stood 90,000 strong, led by our gedolim, the words Shema Yisrael piercing the very heavens. Those unforgettable moments came to life again on October 30th at MetLife Stadium, as a group of community leaders, askanim, and Gedolei Yisrael joined together to sign the contract for The 13th Siyum, which will be held on January 1st, 2020 at MetLife Stadium.
